Nienke Kools chats with Cim Froeling and gets info on the LTD x NBA collaboration and a sneak peek into the next ventures of No Boys Allowed.

Cim Froelings, who set the fashion statement with ‘No Boys Allowed’, a pioneer in the female sneaker industry, 5 years ago…shines light on her next developments for the brand, website and store. She explains why she selected LimitedTshirts.com, and is looking forward to collaborating with them to help kick start the new ‘No Boys Allowed’ apparel line. She has connected with a talented graphics designer, and her close friend, Cris Kühlen to help design a new t-shirt which will be the next special edition tees up for votes. You’re a pioneer in what you do, what made you come up with the idea of an only girl sneaker store?
I have a size 37 and a big love for shoes in general, sneakers especially, and that’s hard to find….or you get the pink ones with all the glitter. I was searching for authentic ones which were hard to come by, which is why I started the shop in order to fill that gap…and its working!

When did this idea start…it boiled at what age?
We are open now for 3 years, and I was busy with it for 1.5 years to make the plan, write it, create the mood boards and finding finance. So I think 5 years now. So, 5 years ago.

What is your drive? You do have your own style…is the shop your style, or have you deviated slightly to cater more to the needs of the market?
I try to see what the demands of the market are, but I have to like everything. It doesn’t necessarily mean that I would wear everything, but I have to ‘get it’. If I think something is ugly then it won’t come in the store.

You are known throughout the world, but how far does your brand reach? I mean it’s very catchy…
Yeah it is! Since we published in ‘SneakerFreaker’ when we opened we had our first piece in ‘SneakerFreaker’ immediately. The whole sneaker community around the world knew about us, so it went very quickly. They are stationed in Australia which is why we’ve got global awareness, but only for the sneaker head. It is not like everyone who likes sneakers knows about No Boys Allowed, but if you are really into sneakers and you are a woman…then you should know about us…. Sometimes I think we are more known outside The Netherlands then within the country…the regular customer still has trouble finding us and they are not fully aware of us here in The Hague, but that can be explained as we are slightly outside of the city shopping centre.

What are your next developments, your future plans? You’ve taken it far, but I’m sure you want to take a step further…
There are a lot of few developments planned. For example we are going to reimage the entire store and we are creating a new website. We will be giving parties once every two months in the ‘SuperMarkt’ (Grote Markt, The Hague). We are also going to work on movies. We took part of the ‘Shoot Me’ Festival, and we are getting our own apparel line, so …

Hey, that sounds really nice, what is it going to include… bags, T-shirts, etc?
Well, we already have bags, the cotton ones when you purchase. But we are printing new ones…this is bag number seven. Every 1000 bags we design a new print. So this is what we are going to do with the store … we are developing our store to include more things than only sneakers. We want to create more of a community.

Ok, so besides the changes you’ve just mention, I know Cris Kühlen designs a lot of stuff for you…
Yes, everything.

So he’s definitely on board, but what made you choose the connection between LimitedTshirts.com and No Boys Allowed? What made you want to come to us…
I like LimitedTshirts.com because you market yourselves very well, and you get to connect with your audience, like making two different prints, posting them on the website for the audience to vote, to see what the public likes the most. So that is very interesting I think, and it will also help us kick-off our own apparel line. So, first promotion through LimitedTshirts.com, then launching our apparel line. It will kick start everything.

Who better to do the launch with, than LimitedTshirts.com!

Also you already have a concept in your head of 500 to 1000 prints of the No Boys Allowed cotton bags, so that special edition mindset connects together well with the branding and concept of LimitedTshirts.com?
Yeah. Definitely.

So Cris Kühlen is designing the prints for the T-shirts…we’ll be having two of his designs and then people on the site will vote.
Yes.

Why Cris Kühlen?
Well, Cris Kühlen and I are friends and I think he’s a very talented graphics designer and there are very few people that can draw like he does. He is also a very charismatic, talented, nice, humble guy…above all very talented, which is what I need for No Boys Allowed.

…and he understands you…
Yeah, we get each other and we can think for each other which is great.

Ok. So who is your favourite designer?…I mean Cris Kühlen will be a definite number one for you…but having looked at the LimitedTshirts.com designers, anyone in particular on the site that sparked an interest in you?
Well, I really liked the t-shirt by Koen Veldman, because I like photography and I think he’s a very good photographer. To be honest, I mostly see the t-shirt designs that are in my circle of friends…for example the Lowman design which is very nice.

But with No Boys Allowed being focused on females, is there perhaps any female artists in particular you wish to put out there?
I’m not very familiar with other artists, as I mainly focus on Cris Kühlen. Although I’m surrounded through my circle of friends by great artists, I mainly work with Cris Kühlen.

Let me just mention…we are really happy you’ve come to LimitedTshirts.com to help launch your apparel line, we think you’re a leader when it comes to setting the tone in such a short time, I mean in 3 years you’ve got so much recognition, which is really amazing… But how do you see the collaboration between No Boys Allowed and LimitedTshirts.com working? How do you see the future with us?
Well, we will have a release party when the t-shirt designs comes out on the LimitedTshirts.com site. The party will be at the store, and we’ll take the next steps from there… lets first get the designs sold, 25 male and 25 female limited t-shirts printed with Cris Kühlen’s design. We’ve still chosen to print t-shirts for men…we still have a lot of male fans (giggle)…

…including the male fan base of LimitedTshirts…
Yeah true. And it is going to be a very cool t-shirt so it’s going to be something that boys will want to have as well.

…so this time we’ll also have a little of ‘boys are allowed’…
Haha yeah, only for this time haha

Why do you think No Boys Allowed and LimitedTshirts are going to be a great team?
I’m not really familiar with the t-shirts and apparel industry…I’m a shoe kind-a-girl…so who better to work with than LimitedTshirts.com. What I like is that you can make something very exclusive and combine powers, which is why I think this is a perfect combination.

…and t-shirts and sneakers are a happy family together, that’s the street wear statement.

Here is the list of our new contest features and a brief explanation:

1. Monthly contest: at the beginning of every month we will add new designs to be voted on and at the end of the month the highest voted design will be printed. Here the designer will receive a royalty fee for every tshirt sold, and we will donate money to our charity partner for ever tshirt sold too.
2. Theme contest: every two months we will have a theme contest in which designers will get one month to design for the specific “theme” ( our first theme will be black and white) and then the second month will be for voting of the designs. The highest voted design will then get printed in which the designer will receive a cash prize of 200.- euros and store credit of 200.- euros. Our charity will also receive a donation for every tshirt sold.
3. Featured artist: in this section we will invite a designer of our choice to showcase 2 designs to our community. The two designs will be up for voting, and the highest voted of his designs will go to print in a limited edition print of 50 units. The featured artist will have a charity of choices where his/her royalties will be donated to. Giving respect to art, the artist and a good cause, and as an end product a sick tshirt! (50 units only, wow!)

Hey Jonathan, how are you doing today?

I am doing well… Have had a busy year and working on a wide range of different projects. And I was super excited that you guys asked me to be the first featured artist for the new Limited T-shirts website. So life is definitely is not boring.

How and why did you get inspired to make the “Ghostly Goddess” and “Shadow Boxing” designs?

Design1 : “Ghostly Goddess” is part of a photography series that was shot on a Greek Island Zakyntos. This series is part of the self-made fanzine called Death on Holiday.

Design2 : “Shadow Boxing” is originally part of a type and shape experimentation whereby the individual letter shapes are made up out of both linear and radial gradient shapes. These shapes are a some of the building blocks in this type face.

What, and who influences your style the most?

Artists like Wobbe Alkema, Hort, Navid Nuur, Kumi Sugai, Non Format, Richard Tullte, Tom Darracott, Christian Brandt and much more… My inspiration and influences can be found on www.typographicartstuff.com

Does music have influence in your art? If so give us THE song.

Yes music is a major inspiration and energy booster. I listen to a lot of different music. Both old and new. I can not really give you THE song but one of the tracks I play to lift my spirits and pursue my goals is Home, by Mike Slott

What is the work you are most proud of? (can you send in some a pictures with an example or if your doing a video show it?)

The stuff that is on my online portfolio I am the most proud of. But I can not really say this or that work is my best because I do not think like that. I am constantly improving and perfecting my skills so I think the next project will be what I am most proud of. But I can not tell you much more than that is going to be something completely different.

What is your next big thing other than designing?

I have embarked on an adventure that I can best describe as an technology startup. I am fascinated by the way mobile computers like smart-phones and tablets are changing our behavior and consumption patterns. And we are researching how these new form of computing will be part peoples lives.

If you would go back in time and tell your old self one bit of advice concerning design what would you say?

Don’t be afraid to say no. And listen to your inner gut feeling. If it feels good do it. If it doesn’t don’t.
